I also use the sample player to trigger samples from the beginning of PInk Floyd’s “Money”, which I control from a hardware button on the MOXF, then fade out as our bass player comes in, using a hardware slider on the MOXF. My MOXF becomes a controller with various sounds across the manual: MOXF, MX49, EX24, ES2, B3, Retro Synth, etc. Mainstage allows me to play MX49 sounds on specific keys on the MOXF - and vice versa. Each performance I call up on MainStage sets up splits, patches, effects, and the sounds on my MOXF and the MX49 (which is also in the rig as a secondary manual and safety in case the MOXF fails). MainStage stores all my band’s 120+ song catalog, which I’ve arranged into genres instead of setlists, since we change up the song order during sets. I also have a 3rd party harmonica library and fiddle library which I use for country tunes, doing weird splits and left-right duplicate splits like Spectrasonics uses in Trillian). While I use the MOXF for most of the sounds in my rig, Mainstage adds organ (B3 and the leslie), various ES2 and RetroSynth patches, EXS24 for custom samples (like the vocal bass part in Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk”, which I created in Logic using about 8 tracks of my vocals pitched down. I run it on a tiny Air with 4GB RAM and have had no issues. As a keyboard player, I use it as an enhancement to my Yamaha MOXF6. I’ve used this now for live performance in about 90 gigs and I love it. 6GB available disk space for minimum install / 72GB hard disk for full Sound Library installation.14,750 Apple Loops in a wide range of genres.Over 5,900 instrument and effect patches.Access a full-screen Tuner to quickly get in tune.Design a custom Pedalboard from a collection of delay, distortion, and modulation stompboxes.Build your own guitar or bass rig with Amp Designer using vintage and modern amps, cabinets, and mics.Get the perfect mix with a collection of vintage and modern EQs, dynamics, and other mixing tools.Add movement to your tracks with a variety of modulation effects.Use a range of multi-tap, vintage tape, and stereo delays.Play your sounds through a variety of realistic acoustic spaces or creative synthesized reverbs.Perform a part and conform notes to a specific scale using Transposer.Play a single note to trigger predefined chords with Chord Trigger.Instantly turn a simple chord into a rich performance with the Arpeggiator.Transform simple ideas into elaborate performances using nine MIDI plug-ins.Perform electronic beats with the Ultrabeat drum machine. The viscosity in these circumstances increases, and shear thickening takes place-this was previously called by the confusing name of dilatancy. It is possible for this ordered arrangement to become disturbed and some degree of three-dimensional structure returns, either as random packing or as clusters. This results in the lowering of the viscosity with increasing shear rate. The flow itself can rearrange the spatial order of the particles, so that the random arrangement at low shear rates can become ordered into strings and layers of particles at high shear rates. At higher concentrations, hydrodynamic and physical interactions between suspended particles increases the resistance even further. The deviation of the flow lines caused by the presence of particles of the dispersed phase increases the resistance, i.e., the viscosity. The viscosity of non-Newtonian liquids usually arises from the presence of at least one dispersed phase in a liquid. This is a useful approximation for the flow rate curve over the shear rate range of measurement only and this in fact was the first-ever non-Newtonian law to be expounded. This would be the stress that has to be exceeded before flow begins. From the linear plot 3a, we see that for a number of liquids it looks as if the stress extrapolates to a yield stress. In Figure 3a, the data is plotted linearly as shear stress against shear rate, and transformed in Figure 3b to viscosity versus shear rate plotted on logarithmic axes: from 3b, we can identify which part of the universal curve we are on. If a standard laboratory viscometer is employed, with a shear rate range of typically 1−1000 s −1, then different types of behavior might be seen, as shown in Figure 3. Depending on the range of shear rates available in Viscosity Measurement different parts of the curve will be accessed for different liquids. The absolute position of this curve on the viscosity and shear rate axes depends on the particular non-Newtonian liquid being investigated, as does the slope of the power-law region, as well as the possible upturn at high shear rate. At low enough shear rates, the viscosity is constant, thereafter decreasing through what is called the power-law region, to eventually flatten out a higher shear rates, often to become constant again, but sometimes rising. The (almost) universal behavior of all such liquids is shown in Figure 2. The most important variation of viscosity for non-Newtonian liquids is with shear rate. Its dependence is such that at the normal pressures found in heat and mass transfer operations, it can usually be neglected. The viscosity of liquids almost always increases with pressure, with water being the sole exception. Around room temperature, the viscosity of water decreases by 3% per degree Celcius oils by about 5%, and bitumen by 15% or more. The temperature dependence of the viscosity of Newtonian liquids is such that the viscosity decreases with temperature, and in general, the higher the viscosity, the greater the rate of decrease with temperature. (Prior to the introduction of the SI system, the cgs unit relevant to low viscosity liquids was the centipoise, which is identical to the mPas.) A form of viscosity often referred to is the kinematic viscosity, ν m 2s −1 which is the quantity we have defined above divided by the density of the fluid, ρ, i.e., ν = η/η. The units of shear stress are Pascals (Pa), shear rate reciprocal seconds (s −1), and so the unit of viscosity is the Pascal-seconds (Pas or Pa.s), with mPas being the more usual unit used for low viscosity fluids. The ratio of these two quantities is the viscosity hence η = σ/ The shear rate (sometimes called the strain rate or velocity gradient), which is the proper measure of the rate of deformation in the fluid undergoing shear flow. In shear flow-where we imagine the flow as hypothetical layers of fluid flowing over each other-we define the relevant parameters as (see Figure 1) σ the shear stress (force per unit area) at the boundary of the fluid to produce the flow, and Quantitatively, viscosity is defined as the stress in a particular ideal flow-field divided by the rate of deformation of the flow. Viscosity can depend on the type of flow (shear and/or extensional), its duration and rate, as well as the prevailing temperature and pressure. Viscosity is that property of a fluid which is the measure of its resistance to flow (i.e.
The Publishing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact As a result, Cockerill was sent to manage the New York World for Pulitzer in May 1883. The economic consequences for the newspaper were serious, and a grand jury would not indict Cockerill for murder. Cockerill claimed the act was self-defense, which was supported by the discovery of a pistol on Slayback’s body. Cockerill then retaliated by shooting Slayback, killing him there and then. A furious Slayback then burst into Cockerill’s office, demanding that Cockerill apologize for the publication. The following day, Cockerill republished an offensive “card” by John Glover that was originally published in November, 1881. Slayback called the newspaper a “blackmailing sheet” and criticized its discussion of Broadhead. While Broadhead didn’t respond to the charges, his law partner Alonzo W. There was an ongoing lawsuit between the city and a gaslight company, and the articles were questioning the role of Broadhead in the lawsuit. Cockerill decided to publish some articles on James Overton Broadhead, who was running for Congress against John Glover. Cockerill was appointed the managing editor of the newspaper, and he ran the newspaper into some trouble in 1882. Joseph Pulitzer remained in control of the newspaper until his retirement in 1907, after which the newspaper remained in the Pulitzer family for generations to come. 4,020 copies of four pages were printed for the newspaper’s first edition on December 12, 1878. When sessions are observed by members of a client organisation, a focus group can provide invaluable insight into who their audience really is. The format of a focus group session can be replicated to some extent and can therefore be taken around various geographical regions to provide high numbers of participants and a good spread of demographics. Advantages of focus groupsįocus groups provide a valuable method to gather customer feedback and opinion on different ideas and concepts. At times the moderator will need to introduce projective techniques and role-play into a session to uncover deeper attitudes and opinions. Moderators need to be skilled in managing and guiding a group without influencing the course of a discussion too much. They can be used early in the product lifecycle to explore options and formulate new ideas, or they can be used later in the process to validate concepts and even choose between prototypes and different designs before launch.įocus groups require an experienced moderator to guide discussions and to encourage participants to get involved. In this context, a focus group can be used to test out ideas and gather opinion on whether the idea will be liked or needed by the target audience.įocus groups are fairly widespread and appear to be an accepted form of research for many organisations. A company may use a focus group to gather customer feedback on a new product or service before they decide to take the concept into development. What are the aims? When or why is it used?įocus groups are used in traditional market research to gather target audience opinions and attitudes about certain products, services or concepts. Typically, a focus group will last around an hour and a half and will sometimes be observed by researchers and members of a wider project team using a one-way mirror. Before running a focus group, the facilitator will design a discussion guide to ensure the participants cover topics which are of interest to the researchers. Each participant is chosen after filling in a screener questionnaire, which allows the researcher to ensure a good mix of people represents the target audience for the project. A focus group is a moderated discussion group of anywhere from 6 to 10 participants. īateman, C., (2011), Imaginary games (Winchester, UK, Washington: Zero Books 2011)īeasley, B.,, Standley, T. I argue that the game publisher’s response to the controversy was inadequate, since the game content, due to the application of representational mechanisms, can be seen as racist even if its developers had no intention of creating such a racist content. A case study I use to illustrate how my typology helps to improve game studies discourse, is LocoRoco-an abstract game accused of containing racist imagery. I argue that the application of this typology to particular elements of games (instead of games understood as a whole) enables us to solve some of the problems caused by the relationship of games to the external world. I combine all of these distinctions to construct a typology of representations in computer games. To increase the descriptive power of Peirce’s trichotomy, I suggest two additional distinctions: the difference between external and internal representations, and the difference between diegetic and non-diegetic representations. I argue that if we use this classification, we gain the ability to make distinctions that game studies often ignore, or do not adequately grasp. The aim of this paper is to explore how Peirce’s trichotomy of symbolic, indexical and iconic representations can be applied to computer games. Loyalist bishop Samuel Seabury argues against the revolution (" Farmer Refuted") and King George III insists on his authority (" You'll Be Back"). Later, the daughters of the wealthy Philip Schuyler-Peggy, Angelica, and Eliza-go into town and share their opinion on the upcoming revolution (" The Schuyler Sisters"). The latter three and Hamilton affirm their revolutionary goals to each other, while Burr remains apprehensive (" The Story of Tonight"). As a student at King's College in New York in 1776, Hamilton meets Aaron Burr, John Laurens, the Marquis de Lafayette, and Hercules Mulligan (" Aaron Burr, Sir"), and impresses them with his rhetorical skills (" My Shot"). The orphan Alexander Hamilton experiences a hard early life, and through his smarts and the charitability of the townsfolks leaves his home, the island of Nevis (" Alexander Hamilton"). Hamilton narrates Alexander Hamilton's life in two acts, and details among other things his involvement in the American Revolutionary War as an aide-de-camp to George Washington, his marriage to Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, his career as a lawyer and secretary of the treasury, and his interactions with Aaron Burr which culminates in their duel at the end of Hamilton's life. No amateur or professional licenses have been granted for Hamilton. The first non-English production opened in Hamburg in October 2022 for which it had been translated into German. tour began January 11, 2019, with a three-week engagement in Puerto Rico in which Miranda returned to the role of Hamilton. The West End production opened at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London on December 21, 2017, following previews from December 6 and winning seven Olivier Awards in 2018, including Best New Musical. The Chicago production of Hamilton began preview performances at the CIBC Theatre in September 2016 and opened the following month. A filmed version of the Broadway production was released in 2020 on Disney+. It received the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. At the 70th Tony Awards, Hamilton received a record-breaking 16 nominations and won 11 awards, including Best Musical. It then transferred to the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway, opening on August 6, 2015, where it received uniformly positive reviews and high box office sales. The musical won eight Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical. It premiered Off-Broadway on February 17, 2015, at the Public Theater in Lower Manhattan, with Miranda playing the role of Alexander Hamilton, where its several-month engagement was sold out. Miranda described Hamilton as about "America then, as told by America now." įrom its opening, Hamilton received near-universal acclaim. It casts non-white actors as the Founding Fathers of the United States and other historical figures. Composed over a seven-year period from 2008 to 2015, the music draws heavily from hip hop, as well as R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes. Based on the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, the musical covers the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his involvement in the American Revolution and the political history of the early United States.
